Abortion Care Network’s statement following the 2024 election

We are deeply proud of the work that independent clinics across the US have done and continue to do. It is a privilege to work on behalf of indie clinics, who organized to pass abortion protections in their states and who show up every day — including today — to provide abortions. It is an honor to dream of a better world alongside our members.

Abortion Care Network members created this community to provide connection, care, and support for people working on the front lines of abortion care. ACN exists so that none of us has to feel alone or work in isolation to expand access to abortion. Take time to feel your feelings, connect with and take care of your people — and then join us in building a better world. We are facing an uncertain future for abortion, but we are not alone, and we are stronger together.

The result of the presidential election is heartbreaking and painful. We are angry and disappointed but not surprised: the United States was built on genocide, slavery, reproductive control, and other forms of oppression. Undoing that violence and oppression has never been easy, and it will take all of us, over many generations.

Experience tells us that we are facing four years of devastating blows to our human rights and public health, and that the harm will extend for decades. Over the last eight years, extreme abortion bans, hateful rhetoric, and clinic closures have fractured abortion access. Despite this, our communities continue to take care of each other; voters continue to prove abortion is popular, and independent clinics remain committed to providing care.

Last night, a majority of voters cast their ballots to protect, expand, or reinstate abortion rights in their states. We are heartened to know that people trust their neighbors to make their own decisions about abortion. We are hopeful that access will expand in Arizona, Colorado, New York, Maryland, Missouri, Montana and Nevada.

The fact that confusing ballot language and undemocratic processes kept protections from passing in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota does not sway our resolve. We believe that every person — even those who oppose abortion — deserves the right to dignified health care.

Change won’t happen overnight — it will take a lot of effort to ensure that these ballot measures actually lead to people being able to get abortions. No matter the results of any election, clinics still desperately need support to stay open, continue providing abortion care, and keep fighting to expand access.

We are heartbroken for Florida-based abortion clinics and those who need them. While nearly 58% of voters in Florida voted to protect abortion in the state constitution, undemocratic rules required at least 60% of the vote to pass. Floridians who oppose abortion are in the minority — yet the state’s six-week abortion ban stands. This ban harms clinics, patients, and families in Florida and across the southeast.

Abortion is popular, and it is crystal clear that most people want access to comprehensive reproductive health care in their own states. Abortion is also a fundamental human right: it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live, whether they can travel, or how much they make.

We don’t know what’s to come for each state, for each independent clinic, or for each person in need of abortion care. We don’t know what’s ahead for trans people, pregnant people, Black and Indigenous people, people of color, or others already facing state violence, surveillance, and criminalization. We know it’s going to get harder, and it’s already unfairly, devastatingly hard. We will have to find new and bolder ways of taking care of each other, and we must be brave and steadfast in that caring.

Independent clinics have been hanging on with all their might in hopes of some relief; today, it is unclear what that will look like. There will always be more you can do than donate — but we are asking you plainly: if you are able, please give to Keep Our Clinics so that we can keep every last independent clinic open for those who need care.

Together with independent clinics and their allies, we are resolute: Abortion Care Network will do everything we can to keep independent abortion clinics open and accessible. This is true as we anticipate a federal administration that does not respect our right to privacy, healthcare, justice, or dignity. This will remain true for years to come, as we shift the tides towards liberation together.
