Independent Abortion Clinics Continue to Provide Care in Louisiana, Colorado, and Throughout the U.S.

This election season, voters in Louisiana and Colorado were faced with ballot measures related to abortion.

• In Colorado, that ballot measure would have limited abortion at 22 weeks of pregnancy; voters overwhelmingly rejected it, meaning clinics can stay open and patients can continue to access the care they need in Colorado.
• In Louisiana, voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that says that the Louisiana constitution does not protect the right to abortion or funding of abortion. This won’t immediately impact abortion access in the state, but creates a major obstacle to ensuring bodily autonomy and access to reproductive health care if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Abortion is already severely restricted in Louisiana; the state has passed nearly 100 abortion restrictions that seek to limit access and stigmatize abortion. Independent clinics in Louisiana continue to work to ensure people in Louisiana can get abortions, taking the fight all the way to the Supreme Court this year. Clinics remain open and abortion is legal in Louisiana today, but politically-imposed barriers make actually getting an abortion unnecessarily difficult, expensive, and sometimes impossible.

Abortion is still legal in Louisiana and Colorado, and every other state in the country. Independent abortion clinics are open and providing care throughout the U.S. Independent abortion clinics spend every penny and all of their time taking care of their patients. They love their communities and they are committed to providing care when and where others do not. There are only three abortion clinics remaining in Louisiana, and all three are independent. Every time a state passes a measure that would ban or restrict abortion, clinics get panicked calls from patients asking if abortion is illegal and available. Abortion is still legal in all 50 states — but the ability to access abortion differs widely between states and regions, and anti-abortion extremists try to make information purposefully confusing.
